What is Cranial Osteopathy?

What is Cranial Osteopathy?
Cranial osteopathy is a very subtle form of osteopathy and follows the same principles, treating the person, not just the pain. The term cranial simply means that it includes the structures inside the head. It uses very gentle pressure techniques to release stress and strains throughout the body, not just the head.

Cranial Osteopaths have a highly developed sense of touch and use it to find subtle changes of tension and tissue quality, to seek out the areas that may be causing problems or the pain. Manipulation, massage and articulation, often alongside other forms of osteopathic treatment are used. Patients may feel different sensations such as mild tension, aching or sensitivity that gradually disappear, or mild warm sensation, others feel very little.

Is Cranial Osteopathy suitable for everyone?

Cranial osteopathy is particularly suitable for babies and infants because it is such a gentle approach, however, it is also suitable for children, adults and the elderly. Some patients refer to it as the “head holding”, some the “relaxing time where they can go to sleep”. Many patients say they are not quite sure how it happens but that it is painless, relaxing and they feel better afterwards.

Parents often bring their baby for cranial treatment because they are experiencing colic, sleeping issues, they had a traumatic birth or have a misshapen head. Adults come in for sleeping problems, headaches, migraines, recurrent ear/sinus issues and neck/back pain.

After treatment many patients will notice improvements in many different areas. This is due to the person and whole body treatment approach. Patients with back pain, after having treatment on the spine or pelvis, often discover digestive problems they have had resolved.

Would you benefit from a gentle approach to treating health conditions?

If you suffer from muscle or joint aches and pains, or would like to try a really gentle approach to treating pain, we have three experienced Cranial Osteopaths who are here to help. They are happy to discuss your problem with you over the telephone to assess what type of treatment is right for you.
