Lanzarote to La Graciosa - by swimming!

When I was young my Grandparents bought some land in Lanzarote and built a holiday home there. So, as kids we were lucky enough to be able to go there for cheap summer holidays.

One of the best views in Lanzarote was from a restaurant high up in the cliff that overlooked a small island, La Graciosa, which was just off the coast. It looked like the island was so close to Lanzarote that you could almost step across to it. However, everyone warned us that the Atlantic currents were so strong that it was far too dangerous to even swim on the beach there let alone swim across to the Island of La Graciosa.

Osteopath to tackle Atlantic OceanFast forward to year 2017, some forty five years later, I found out that there is an annual swim from Lanzarote across the 2.6km to La Graciosa. That definitely had to go on my bucket list!

So, I have signed up to do the swim this October. The training is going well but as I am writing this I have to admit that I am getting a little nervous. Especially as I was told recently that a few years ago 80% of the 600 swimmers had to be rescued due to high winds. Exciting!!

More will follow - I will let you know how I get on!
