HOW TO CHOOSE A SCHOOL BAG FOR YOUR CHILD?

It’s that time of year again; the summer holidays are over and we are back into a new school term. An important consideration is the nature of a child’s school bag. An increasing number of children and young people are presenting with back, neck or shoulder issues in clinical practice.

It is a common occurrence that this discomfort is related to inappropriate and/or ill-fitting school bags. This can put excess load on a child’s back and neck, which may lead to certain spinal problems. Luckily, these issues may be avoided simply through the choice of a school bag.

ADVICE ON CHOOSING A SCHOOL BAG

  • Choose a backpack with two shoulder straps instead of a bag with a single strap in order to avoid excess load on one side of the spine
  • Ensure that the chosen backpack has adjustable straps so that the bag may be fitted into the correct position. The bag should never hang below the waistline
  • These straps should be padded to reduce excessive pressure on the shoulders and distribute the weight of the bag more evenly
  • The bag should be appropriate to your child’s body size
  • Try to choose a backpack that has several compartments to allow for a better distribution of weight
  • Both the backpack and its contents should not exceed 15% of your child’s bodyweight. If it is too heavy, mechanical strain onto the neck and shoulders and a bent forward walking posture may occur in order to absorb the excess weight
  • Opt for a good quality bag that is made of a lightweight but durable fabric

Good luck to all for the new school year!
